Frequently Asked Questions
How often should my cat be shaved down?
If you dislike hair in your house your cat should be shaved every three to four months, otherwise twice a year, Spring and fall
should suffice.
Do you have a Van? No, I do NOT have a van. Since I do CATS ONLY, there is not a need for such an expensive gas guzzling vehicle Because of this I am able to keep my prices extremely reasonable.
Where do you groom the kitty? I do it in your home. My belief is that cats are more comfortable staying in their own environment. I like a small bathroom or laundry room as cats do better in an enclosed space with the door shut.. Kitty and myself would like you present during the procedure, Your cat will be more calm with you there and at times I may need a little assistance
What do I need me to do in preparation? If your cat is skittish it is helpful to have her contained before I get there in order to save time looking for her/him and creating more stress.. If I am bathing the cat I would require a towel from you but nothing else, I bring everything, a table, shampoo, dryer, clippers, garbage bag and vacuum for clean up. (I no longer am able to bathe cats in FULL coat, however I am willing to bathe the kitty after a shave down/lion cut)
How do you manage and control the cat during shave downs? Since noosing is not an option for cats it just takes a little patience and persistence. The firm but gentle grip behind the neck which I call the Mommy hold works miracles. It not only releases endorphins but It gives the kitty the message to be still and be quiet! I like to think of it as being an all natural sedative. At times l may need your assistance since I work alone. Contrary to popular belief most cats are fairly tolerant to this procedure.
Can you sedate my cat? No, only a Veterinarian can use sedation methods.
How long does it take to shave a cat? Generally about 30-40 minutes if there isn't tight excessive matting. I have learned to be fast as cats only have about a 20 minute tolerance level. If I am bathing your cat in addition to the shave it will be an additional 20 or 30 miniutes.
Why is there an extra charge for heavy matting? I do not charge anymore for basic light matting, but on occasion a cats matting can be extremely tight and excessive called pelting, therefore taking up 30 minutes longer or more to get through them. It is very tedious and takes extra TLC in order not to cut the kitty. There also is more wear and tear on my blades and clippers.
How often should I clip my cats nails?
Every Three to four weeks. However I do not come out for claw clipping only..If you would like to attempt your self click here
http://www.wikihow.com/Trim-Your-Cat's-Nails It's truly very simple, be brave and give it a try!
Will my cat be traumatized or go into hiding after the grooming? No they will not..In fact they will experience a day or 2 of euphoria! You will enjoy that part very much! Cats are very intelligent and although they may put up a fuss during the procedure, once they have been released all they know is that they are not hurt and they feel amazing! They typically just walk off with their tails up high! You and kitty have nothing to worry about so try not to fret. It rarely goes as badly as you are imagining.
AN IMPORTANT WORD OF CAUTION: Although it is very tempting to cut out matts, PLEASE do not do so. Most people end up cutting the cats skin and don't even know they've done it. It is extremely difficult to know where the hair ends and the skin begins. Cats skin is like tissue paper and cuts very easily. I myself don't use scissors for cutting out matts, it is much to dangerous and you may find yourself at the emergency Vet.
